Wondering how to naturally accelerate your workout?
We turned to Dr. Kai Herman, Naturopathic Doctor at Elixia Wellness Group, for the inside scoop. She is a wellness guru who works extensively with competitive and recreational athletes to help optimize their health and performance. Dr. Herman specializes in Hormone Therapy, IV Nutritional Therapy, and Non-surgical aesthetic and orthopedic medicine using a combination of natural modalities to help patients meet their health goals. According to Dr. Herman, herbs are the answer to supercharge your training while reducing your risk of injury or burnout. Here is what she has to say!
Energize your effort!
“By far, my favorite class of herbs to use prior to a hard workout are Adaptogenic herbs. Adaptogens are a type of herb that help people function better under stress (of any kind). This includes the stress your body experiences during a high intensity workout, such as MegaBurn. These herbs also protect your body from breaking down due to repetitive stress and strain, facilitating further intense training.”
“Proven effects of these herbs include: increased energy production and stamina, enhanced muscle function, less fatigue, and improved recovery between workouts. These herbs may also aid in weight-loss, fat-burning, and other anti-aging effects.”
Dr. Herman encourages her athletes to use 1-2 of the following herbs prior to training and/or on a daily basis:
• Eleutherococcus Senticosus/ Siberian Ginseng
• Panax Ginseng/ Asian Ginseng
• Withania somnifera/ Ashwagandha
• Schisandra chinensis/ Schisandra
• Rhodiola rosea/ Rhodiola
Optimizing circulation of blood throughout your body supports your body’s capacity for intense physical activity. Good blood flow helps sustain muscular function through the delivery of oxygen and glucose (aka muscle fuel) to cells. Additionally, the increased blood flow has a pain reducing effect on sore and over-worked muscles, helping you to push through the burn!
Dr. Herman recommends using at least one of the following herbs, along with the adaptogens mentioned above, to maximize your workout efforts:
• Ginkgo Biloba/ Gingko
• Capsicum frutescens/ Cayenne
• Zingiber officinalis/ Ginger
Inflammation naturally occurs following an intense workout. Some inflammation is actually beneficial and drives change, helping your body become stronger and more resilient. However, too much inflammation can lead to soreness, recurring injuries, and muscle fatigue. Prior to or following your workout, taking 1-2 of these herbs can help regulate inflammation, rather than totally suppressing it, which aids recovery and prevents injuries from overuse and tissue damage:
• Curcuma Longa/ Turmeric
• Boswelia Serrata/ Frankinsence
• Licorice/ Glycyrrhiza glabra
